Online Program FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About The Online Program at AAMI

1. How long will it take to complete the Online Program?

A student taking 8 credits a semester can complete the program in 3 years.

2. Can I take the entire Funeral Service Associate Degree Online?

You can take all of the courses online except the clinical components in Restorative Art and Embalming and the Comprehensive National Board Exam Review. These courses will require you to come to New York City during the two-week Capstone.

3. How are the Clinical Labs completed?

You will be required to travel to New York City once in the last semester of your program for approximately two weeks. During your stay in New York you will complete your Embalming, Restorative Art and Comprehensive Exam requirements.

4. What will it cost me for two weeks in New York City?

AAMI estimates that it will cost a student approximately $3,000 to complete this final part of the program. This figure includes airfare, transfers to and from the airport, hotel room, meals and taxis. If a student is willing to room with one or more other students, it is estimated that these costs could be cut in half.

5. How will I find a hotel in New York City?

In addition, at the beginning of your final semester, a Capstone Guide will be provided with information about transportation to and from airports, housing options (including the opportunity to room with one or two of your fellow students), transportation in the City (i.e., bus, subway and taxi), restaurant options, and interesting and fun things (especially those that are free) to do in the City.

6. Are the Online Courses the same as Campus Courses?

The online courses at AAMI have the same requirements and content as those offered on the campus.

7. Is there a limit on the number of credits I may take online in a semester?

Yes. You are limited to 14 credits per semester.

8. Is there a minimum number of credits I must take?

There is no minimum. However, you must complete the degree in four years. See the answer to question #9 below.

9. Is there a time requirement for completing the Associate Degree?

Yes. All courses and requirements must be completed within four years from the first day of class of the first course in which you are enrolled at AAMI. Failure to complete the required coursework within the four-year timeframe will require the student to repeat all courses taken more than four years prior to the completion of the requirements. The reason for this requirement is that students must pass the National Board Exam and coursework taken more than four years prior to the exam is unlikely to prepare the student for success.

10. Will I be able to finish in four years taking courses part-time?

The Associate Degree requires the successful completion of 69 credits. In a four-year period there are 12 semesters of 13 weeks each. If you take 5 or 6 credits (approximately 2-3 courses) per semester, you could finish the program in four years.

11. What technology will I need to take courses?

You will need access to a personal computer with a modem, a web cam and a printer. In addition, you will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP), email and World Wide Web (www) browser capabilities. Please call 866.932.2264 for more information on technology requirements. You will also need a high-speed internet connection.

12. How will I take tests?

Most of your exams will be taken over the Internet. Midterms and final exams will be scheduled for specific dates and you will need a password to access them. Most password protected tests will have a time-limit requirement.

13. Will I have any communication with other students?

Yes. We encourage communication with the faculty and other students. Each course is built with discussion groups as a central component of the course. There will be many team projects and other opportunities to get to know your fellow students. You will also spend two weeks in New York City with fellow students while completing your clinical requirements.

14. Are the admission requirements the same as the Campus Program?

Yes, the admission requirements are exactly the same.

19. How much will it cost?

If it has been more than 4 years since you completed your degree, and you passed the national board exam, the credits earned more than 4 years ago will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.
